Ambulatory Assistance Devices

Power, or electric, wheelchairs have become quite popular among elderly and disabled people. Like other objects, power wheelchairs have their advantages and disadvantages. Obviously, electric wheelchairs are convenient and easy to maneuver. The user controls them. Depending on the model, some wheelchair can be controlled by the mouth or by some other device, but the most common ones employ a joystick. For someone who does not have complete use of their hands, controlling with other means is important for that person.

There are many companies out there that make thsees wheelchairs and serveral venues where you can purchase one. Online stores and mall stores make wheelchairs for people of all ages, sizes, shapes and disabilities. The manufacturer or local stores can customize wheelchairs to fit the user and his needs.

There can be disadvantages with electric wheelchairs, but with right modifications, they can be turned into advantages. These wheelchairs don’t tend to fold up or come apart. That is why the power wheelchair may not be right for someone who does not have a large van or travels a lot; they probably would have to purchase a less comfortable manual wheelchair that is collapsible. However, there are power chairs that fold up or disassembles, but is a lot more expensive. However popular electric wheelchairs have grown to be, not everyone can afford one.

Many individuals who are disabled, injured or otherwise are still without one. The biggest deterrent to acquiring a wheelchair is financial incapacity. Be sure to talk with your insurance representative or Medicare, since wheelchair use advised by a doctor may be covered partially or even fully.
